AUTHORITIES in Zimbabwe have charged 45 people who were allegedly plotting an Egypt-style revolt in Zimbabwe. Treason is an offence that carries the death penalty in Zimbabwe.

The group of academics, activists and trade unionists were arrested after attending a political speech titled "Revolt in Egypt and Tunisia: What Lessons can be learnt by Zimbabwe and Africa?" and organised by Enoch Chikweche (aka Munyaradzi Gwisai).

Gwisai is a former student leader and former opposition MDC legislator. He is now the International Socialist Organisation lead representative in Zimbabwe.

Seven members of the group alleged that they were beaten by security agents while in custody. Others are in need of HIV medication.

They appeared in court briefly today and have been returned to custody.
