George Mpombo says he saw his arrest coming. Commenting on his arrest, Mpombo said it was expected and that he was ready to defend himself.

“I saw it coming. It is part of the political establishment playground. But no storm blows itself out,” he said.

Police yesterday arrested former defence minister Mpombo on six counts of theft by public servant and forgery of documents.

Mpombo, who is Kafulafuta member of parliament, was arrested at around 11:30 hours at Kabwata Police Station in connection with the Auditor General’s query on the Ministry of Defence during the time he served as defence minister.

But Mpombo has described his arrest as part of the government’s plan to persecute and intimidate him.

Mpombo charged that the police were being used by people with corrupt deals to persecute him.

“It is sad that they are doing politics of persecution and intimidation at the time when the country is going to the polls. This persecution is being instigated by people who can justifiably be called Zambia’s “Mecca” of corrupt hanky-panky deals,” he said.

Mpombo, however, said after this year's general elections, Zambians would see “who has been swimming naked”.

“At the end of the day when the tide is over, especially by September, Zambians will see who has been swimming naked,” he said.

Mpombo said he was optimistic that the court would clear him on all the charges.

“I am confident that once this issue is looked at by the courts, they will find it as another abuse of the court process by our colleagues who are behaving like ravenous wild dogs, ba mumbwe,” he said.

Confirming Mpombo's arrest in an interview, his lawyer Wynter Kabimba said Mpombo was released on a K5 million police bond with two sureties.

“They (police) have effected an arrest on six counts of theft by public servant and forgery of documents. He has been released on K5 million police bond and is expected to appear in court on April 29th in Lusaka,” Kabimba said.

Police last year recorded a warn and caution statement from Mpombo regarding the Auditor General’s query on the Ministry of Defence.
