TWO Zambians have been jailed by the Mzimba magistrates' court in Malawi after being found guilty of drug trafficking. Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) public relations manager John Nyawali disclosed yesterday that Felix Phiri, 43, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour while John Zulu, 42, was handed an eight-year jail term.

Nyawali said the two were found guilty of trafficking in 20 bags of loose cannabis, with each bag weighing about 90 kilogrammes. He said Phiri and Zulu were arrested by the Mzimba police a fortnight ago when they attempted to traffic the psychotropic substance into Zambia.

And Nyawali said the Commission had arrested a 36-year-old Lebanese for drug trafficking.

He said Marc Dargham, a business developer, was arrested from a hotel in Lusaka after he was found with nine sachets of crack cocaine.

Nyawali said the arrest followed an operation that DEC officers conducted at the hotel after trailing Dargham.

He said Dargham was also found with paraphernalia containing cocaine powder hidden in the drawers of his hotel room.

Nyawali said Dargham, who came into the country two weeks ago, was in police custody and would appear in court soon.
