MMD has no moral right to continue in office after wasting public resources on a failed constitution, says Dr Fred Mutesa. And Dr Mutesa says President Rupiah Banda had an opportunity to steer back the constitution-making process on a people-driven path but his judgement was clouded by his appetite to retain power.

In an interview Dr Mutesa, who is president for Zambians for Empowerment and Development, said people should not waste their vote on MMD because it had failed them on many things especially on the constitution-making process.

“MMD has lost its moral justification to continue in power. The people should not even waste time on the ballot voting for MMD. They should vote them out,” he said.

Dr Mutesa said MMD had passed a vote of no confidence on itself for wasting huge amounts of public resources on a constitution they knew from the beginning was not people driven.

He said the money wasted on the failed constitution could have benefited other sectors and helped alleviate poverty in rural areas.

Dr Mutesa said the entire MMD should take full responsibility on the failed constitution, instead of blaming certain individuals within the party and the opposition political parties.

“We disagree with those calling for the resignation of Vice-President George Kunda, but this is not to say the man is not entirely at fault,” he said.

“Making Kunda a sacrificial lamb would be hiding in the collective failures of the MMD government. What happened on the constitution-making process was a failure of the ruling party as a collective entity.”

Dr Mutesa said President Banda's party had lost its moral right to continue in office because it was a wasteful government.

He said President Banda had a chance to leave a proper constitution and a legacy for Zambians but chose power over people.

“They embarked on a process which departed from the wishes of the people from the beginning. President Rupiah Banda had the opportunity to steer back the constitution-making process onto the people-driven path when he took office. Unfortunately he chose to exert his efforts on getting re-elected rather than delivering a people driven constitution,” said Dr Mutesa.

He said MMD should pay for failing to deliver in the years it has been in power.
