INSPECTOR General of Police Francis Kabonde says the Zambia Police Force will engage political parties ahead of this year's elections to ensure a violence-free poll. Kabonde said the police plan to involve all stakeholders in the electoral process to mutually iron out concerns in order to lay ground for a violence-free election.

“In fact, on this same issue we are preparing to work with political parties and other stakeholders, including the media,” Kabonde said during the commanders workshop which ended on Thursday.

“Having evaluated the level of preparedness by all the provincial commanding officers, we are confident that we are getting ready to police the 2011 tripartite elections free of violence. However, we appeal to members of the public to cooperate with us and ensure that this year’s elections are peaceful.”

Kabonde said after a thorough scrutiny by the commanders, a handbook entitled ‘Policing elections in Zambia’ had been adopted which would be used to retrain police officers in election duties.
