THE Vatican envoy to Zambia has urged the Catholic Church to remain united ahead of this year?s general elections. Archbishop Nicola Girasoli said the strength of the church was anchored on its unity. Ambassador Girasoli made the remarks during the blessing and consecration of the new St Lawrence Catholic Church in Lusaka's Kamwala South last Sunday.

?Unity is the strength we have as the Catholic in Zambia and the world. Even in the face of problems, we should always remain attached to our church,? Archbishop Girasoli said.

He assured the congregants who had gathered to witness the consecration ceremony that the Holy Spirit was always with them even in the midst of challenges and controversies.

?We as Catholics are full of hope. Let us remain united even as the country goes to the polls,? Archbishop Girasoli said.

And Cardinal Medardo Mazombwe said the Catholic Church in Zambia had experienced the fastest numerical growth.

However, he said the numerical growth experienced over the years was not enough unless it were accompanied by maturity in faith.

?We need to remain attached to our faith at all times. Let us be Catholics in everything, continuing with the works of compassion and evangelising,? said Cardinal Mazombwe.

Good Sheppard Catholic Church Kabwata Parish council chairperson, Fidelis Chisenga, said the opening of St Lawrence Parish marked a milestone in evangelisation of Good Sheppard Parish, the overseer of the new parish.
