CIVIL servants that have been adopted to stand in this year’s elections must resign, says Fr Frank Bwalya. Commenting on the recent announced adoption of MMD parliamentary candidates that include some civil servants to stand in this year’s elections, Fr Bwalya said their continued stay in office after joining active politics was immoral and illegal.
“People should look at these as individuals that do not respect the rule of law and decency of politics. This is abuse of office,” Fr Bwalya said.
“In fact, Zambians in constituencies where they are standing should reject them because they lack respect of the law.”
He said MMD was so desperate that it had now resorted to shortcuts just to stay in power.
The MMD has adopted Ministry of Health director of technical services, Dr Canisius Banda, director of public health research in the same ministry, Dr Victor Mukonka and Northern Province permanent secretary Mwalimu Simfukwe to stand as parliamentary candidates in Mandevu, Monze and Mbala constituencies respectively.
The trio has, however, not resigned from their government positions, as per requirement upon declaring interest in active politics.
Civil servants are barred by law from engaging in active politics.
