THE POST is Zambia’s biggest achievement in media freedom, says Father Jackson Katete. Commenting on The Post’s 20th anniversary which fell on Tuesday, Fr Katete, who is Lusaka Anglican Church diocese secretary, said the paper has, in the 20 years of its existence, managed to improve from being a weekly to a daily publication due to good innovative ideas.

He said The Post has provided the public with an ear to hear the other side of the story which would not be told by the government.

“We would like, as Anglican Diocese of Lusaka, to congratulate you on your birthday which fell Tuesday, we are grateful that you have provided alternative news, you have provided the public that ear to hear the other side of the coin. You have carried out controversial issues under very difficult circumstances but you have managed to pull through. It is the biggest achievement in media freedom,” Fr Katete said.

He said whether correct or wrong, The Post has managed to tell the stories fairly and balanced and urged the paper to aspire to be more balanced.

“We have different government organisations and you have told us the other side of the coin, we know you have an editorial policy but this should be the same with the public media for people to make informed choices,” he said.

Fr Katete said others had tried to equal the type of coverage in competition with the then Weekly Post, but lacked innovation.

“I would like to point out the innovations of your paper which others need to learn from you in terms of colour print, pictures, the marketing is very good of the paper as you tell us the story that the others public media do not want to tell us to know,” said Fr Katete.

And Radio Phoenix chairman Errol Hickey said The Post has become popular among the community despite its ups and downs over the last twenty years.

“The paper must be congratulated heartily, they have done an excellent job, and are very popular among the community. They started from the small paper to an excellent daily paper,” said Hickey.
