MIKE Mulongoti has revealed that he survived an attempt on his life while on his way to Lufwanyama on the Copperbelt last Saturday. Explaining the ordeal in an interview yesterday, Mulongoti, who recently endorsed the candidature of PF leader Michael Sata, attributed the attempt on his life to the government system, which he said perceived him to be a threat and stumbling block to their ambitions.
“We were going to Lufwanyama to attend a traditional ceremony with Jack Kalala, who was driving my vanette, and Patrick Mwanwawasa, in whose car I was travelling. After we left Kitwe, Patrick and I decided to wait for Mr Kalala who had lost us in traffic,” Mulongoti said.
“But a few minutes later, I received a call from Kalala telling me that they were almost involved in an accident. Kalala explained that a car had suddenly overtaken my vehicle, which he was driving. He explained that the car which had overtaken the vehicle turned and started driving back in the opposite direction. Mr. Kalala said inside the vehicle were people pointing to my vehicle, saying ‘this is the one. This is the one’.”
“Suddenly, instead of following the directive, the driver of the car behind Mulongoti’s to which instructions were being given reversed and stopped. Mr Kalala said he managed to swerve and move to the middle of the road,” Mulongoti said.
“Two rough-looking men got off the pick-up shivering, saying that they were just given instructions by the occupants of the car which had just gone in the opposite direction.”
Mulongoti said Mr Kalala, Dr Chishiba and the other passengers were so shaken that they couldn’t take note of the number plate of the vehicle.
Mulongoti, who was recently fired from the government and the MMD after he attempted to the challenge Vice-President George Kunda for the position of party vice-president at the party convention, described the incident as a ploy by the government system to eliminate him.
However, Mulongoti said he was more than willing to die if that was the price of defending democracy.
