THERE is nothing sweeter than being a Cabinet minister, says works and supply minister Gabriel Namulambe. Namulambe made the remarks yesterday during a briefing in Lusaka in response to assertions published in online publications that two ministers, he and labour minister Austin Liato, planned to defect to the PF.

Namulambe, who is also MMD chairman for elections and Mpongwe member of parliament, said he was strong in his constituency and would be adopted. He said only members of parliament who had failed to perform would defect to the opposition political parties.

“What more would a person look for. I’m chairman for elections in the ruling MMD and Minister of Works and Supply. Why should I defect?

There is nothing more sweet than being chairman for elections. And there is nothing sweeter than being a full cabinet minister. I and honourable Liato are very strong in our constituencies; we’ve performed. We’re confident that the MMD will adopt us,” Namulambe said.

He said the ground was more fertile for defection when he was dropped as sports minister.

“Why should I be so foolish to defect to the opposition? My chiefs on the Copperbelt are the ones that I listen to and so far the instructions from my 15 chiefs given to me are that we should rally behind President Banda because he was left in that office by president Mwanawasa,” he said.

Namulambe said the article was malicious and meant to discredit him.
And Liato said some media institutions had an agenda to destabilise the MMD.

“Leave the MMD alone to concentrate itself on preparing for the elections. I know some people have a pocket agenda to divide us by peddling lies,” said Liato.
