ZAMBIA needs leaders that are ready to sacrifice their comfort and privileges to uplift the living standards of the majority poor, says Reverend Richard M’bao. In an interview, Rev M’bao who is chairperson of the Pastors Forum for Eastern and Southern Africa, said only selfless leaders would help the country to come out of the shackles of poverty.
He said the country had faced serious governance challenges in the past two decades since turning to multiparty politics because of lack of credible leadership to fight corruption and an ineffective governance style.
Rev M’bao said it was unfortunate that the country would soon celebrate 50 years of independence without a credible republican constitution that represents the wishes of the people because of selfish leadership.
He said it was disheartening that politicians, especially those in government, had amassed wealth for themselves and their families when the majority of citizens were wallowing in poverty and the country still facing the challenges of underdevelopment.
“In the day-to-day contacts of civil society organisations particularly with the rural and peri-urban poor, revelations have been observed first-hand about the suffering of our people. The truth of the matter is that people are suffering and dying because they are unable to access adequate health care, sufficient food and other basic needs,” said Rev M’bao.
