THE 14th edition of the Zimbabwe International Film Festival opens in Harare today with a series of film screenings and workshops lined up. Running under the theme "Finding Common Ground", the eight-day festival will this year assume a new look in the form of a new director, Charity Maruta, more partners among them the Spanish Embassy, as well as a number of new screening venues.

Besides collaborating with the organisers, the Spanish Embassy will also be one of the venues for the screenings of the films during the festival. Spanish films like "Atame", which kickstarted the career of prominent Hollywood action movies hunk Antonio Banderas is expected to be one of the major highlights during the fete.
Literally translated as "Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down", the movie - directed by prominent Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar - deals with issues like love, madness and destiny.

Local filmmakers and film buffs will also have a chance to rub shoulders with some of the world's renowned filmmakers who are expected to converge on the festival and impart their skills about the industry.
Celebrated South African filmmaker Ramadan Suleman will conduct workshops on how to make films and documentaries.
Apart from the film screenings and workshops, show goers will also be treated to live performances when musicians Andy Brown and mbira queen Chiwoniso Maraire take to the stage during the opening ceremony of the film festival.

The festival seeks to provide a platform for filmmakers to showcase their talent.
It is also aimed at connecting Africans across the continent, in the Caribbean, the Pacific, Europe, the Americas and Asia apart from making sure that the Zimbabwean public is exposed to the rich cultural heritage of Africa through films.

The Zimbabwe International Film Festival is an annual event that began in 1998 while the Trust is a a non-profit organisation.
The festival showcases feature films, documentary films and short films, as well as providing workshops and other cultural events.

ZIFF strives to be a dynamic institution for the promotion of radical story telling and sustainable innovations in film-making in Zimbabwe and the region.
To contribute to the film industry in Zimbabwe and internationally by the development, production, selling and distribution of innovative audio visual products together with education and training services.
