Malawi’s opposition People’s Party (PP) Legal Affairs Director, Paul Maulidi, flew to Zambia to represent state vice president Joyce Banda, who is the leader of the party, at the swearing in ceremony of president-elect, Michael Chilufya Sata at Parliament Buildings in Lusaka.

Sata was declared winner of the presidential election held on Tuesday. Sata, popularly known as ‘King Cobra’, beat incumbent Rupiah Bwezani Banda of Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), an allied of Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika.

According to PP spokesperson, Stephen Mwenye there have existed close links between the Patriotic Front (PF) of Sata and the PP.

Maulidi: Attends Sata's swearing-in ceremony

“As a party, we wish to congratulate His Excellency Michael Sata and the Patriotic Front for this historical victory. PP hopes that the cordial relations that exist between our two parties would be strengthened further,” Mwenye said.

He disclosed that the state vice president Banda went to the United States of America last week hence could not personally attend Sata’s inauguration.

Meanwhile, Mwenye has also disclosed that the PP will be officially launched in the central region (province) on October 1, 2011 at Masintha Ground in the capital city, Lilongwe.

The party was first officially launched on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Nyambadwe Lions Primary School Lower Ground in Blantyre in the south and in Mangochi in the eastern region (province) on September 11, 2011. It is being launched under the theme “Moving into the Future with Hope”.

According to Mwenye, the party is looking forward to a “peaceful launch” and that is in this respect that the party has extended official invitation to leaders of all political parties in Malawi to witness the event.

“PP is for true and clean politics; you will on this day see and hear Right Honourable Joyce Banda articulate her vision for Malawi—a truly democratic and peaceful Malawi with a Republican Constitution that protects all citizens. She will expound on the PP official pillars of Unity, Equity and Development,” said the PP publicist.
