VIOLENCE has absolutely no place in a democratic election, says British High Commissioner to Zambia Tom Carter.

In an interview, High Commissioner Carter said international election observers and monitors currently in the country were looking forward to free, fair and peaceful elections.

"First of all, violence has absolutely no place in an election and that is something we will be looking for, an election free of violence. We also want the playing field to be levelled and indications are that preparations are going well," he said.

High Commissioner Carter said next Tuesday´s elections would be an exciting moment for all Zambians.

"There are a lot of election observers already here in Zambia and I think the overriding message from all of us observers and indeed from the international community is that we want these elections to be free of violence," he said.

Campaigns ahead of Tuesday's polls have been characterised by sporadic incidences of violence.
