BRITISH Prime Minister David Cameron has congratulated President Michael Sata on his victory following the September 20 presidential election. In a congratulatory message delivered by the British High Commissioner to Zambia Tom Carter to President Sata in Lusaka on Tuesday, Prime Minister Cameron said the transparent and peaceful manner in which the September 20 polls were conducted was a major success for democracy in Zambia and an example to others in the region and across Africa.

"The UK and Zambia have a strong bilateral relationship built on deep foundations going back many years, and we are keen to work closely with you. I hope my Minister for Africa, Henry Bellingham, will be able to visit Zambia soon, so that we can begin discussions with you on key areas of co-operation," Prime Minister Cameron said.

He hoped British investment in Zambia could be encouraged and a greater flow of trade between the two countries.

"Trade and integration within Africa is also critically important for tackling poverty in the region, and we look forward to supporting you in taking this forward over the next few years. We also hope to continue to work with your government as a committed development partner to Zambia," he said.

Prime Minister Cameron also expressed hope that he would meet President Sata at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth, Western Australia at the end of this month.

Minister for Africa, Henry Bellingham is expected to visit Zambia next month.
This will be the first visit by a minister from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in many years and offers opportunity to explore and strengthen key areas of co-operation between Britain and Zambia.
