SENIOR Chief Bright Nalubamba of Namwala says the Patriotic Front government should treat the issue of coming up with a new constitution as a matter of urgency. In an interview yesterday, chief Nalubamba also urged the government to shorten the process of coming up with a new constitution.

He said it only required a special committee to deal with recommendations people made in the Mung'omba constitution review commission and present them for parliamentary approval.

"We have been pressing for a new constitution for a long time now, as you might be aware, I was one of the commissioners on the Mung'omba commission, we made very good recommendations but at the NCC they brought a lot of people, some of them were irrelevant, they spent a lot of money. So I want the current government to shorten the journey, it has been too long and we would want this constitution to be put in place as a matter of urgency because that is the only way we can respond to people's wishes," chief Nalubamba said.

He said people's wishes were already expressed in the Mung'omba draft constitution.

Chief Nalubamba expressed concern that a lot of taxpayers' money was wasted carelessly on the NCC and there was need for people who were involved to account for it.

"You cannot spend people's money carelessly like that, these are public funds, people must be brought to account for such kind of things. A lot of money was spent so lavishly and the poor people are suffering in the village. I am in total support of the people who want to see justice prevail," chief Nalubamba said.
