JOHANNESBURG - The ANC has confirmed that it has received documents for the appeals of its sanctioned youth league leaders. The documents were received on Thursday night by party secretary general Gwede Mantashe's office and immediately handed over to Cyril Ramaphosa, the chairman of the ANC National Disciplinary Committee of Appeals (NDCA), spokesman Jackson Mthembu said in a statement yesterday.
The statement comes after the ANCYL leaders' lawyer, Dali Mpofu, earlier yesterday confirmed that they had filed appeals. Mthembu said that from now, the appeal would be handled by the NDCA until it was finalised.
Any communication on the process would be decided by the NDCA at intervals determined by the committee. ANCYL president Julius Malema was found guilty of bringing the ruling party into disrepute and sowing seeds of division.
League spokesman Floyd Shivambu, deputy president Ronald Lamola, treasurer general Pule Mabe, secretary general Sindiso Magaqa and deputy secretary general Kenetswe Mosenogi were also found guilty of various charges and sanctioned by the ANC's national disciplinary committee two weeks ago.
Malema was given a five-year suspension and Shivambu three years. The ANC membership of the other four leaders was suspended for two years, suspended for three years. They were given a deadline of Thursday night to appeal against their suspensions. - SAPA.
