THE Lusaka magistrates' court yesterday sentenced a 48-year-old man to 30 days community service or six months imprisonment in default for stealing 6,000 kwacha.

Before Lusaka chief resident magistrate Joshua Banda was Robert Siame of Lusaka's Chawama area, who pleaded guilty to stealing K6,000 from Moono Sheila Bwalya on December 15, 2011.

It was alleged that Siame on the material day approached Bwalya in her shop in Kabwata and told her he was selling rice.

The facts further stated that whilst Bwalya was attending to other customers, Siame, a widower, stole the K6,000 which was on the table and that when Bwalya queried him about it, he returned the money.

Magistrate Banda found Siame guilty of the offence of theft.

And in passing the 30-day community service sentence at the court precinct, magistrate Banda advised Siame to work hard so that hunger does not become an excuse for him to steal.

Magistrate Banda said theft was a serious crime regardless of the value of the property involved.

"I hope that you have learnt your lesson," said magistrate Banda.
"Crime does not pay. You are able-bodied."
