THE new government should not go to sleep but always be in touch with the people, advises chief Nyamphande. And chief Nyampande has advised Zambians to respect former president Rupiah Banda and not insult him just because he lost elections.

Speaking when former independent Msanzala member of parliament Colonel Joseph Lungu informed him that he had joined PF, chief Nyamphande of the Nsenga said if the PF went to sleep during their reign, people would rise against them. He said it was not surprising to see people change political alliances.

"Some years back, we were all UNIP members. Then came a time to change, it was MMD, isn't it? After MMD now there is PF. This is what we call political development. So even for PF, if you sleep, you will see five years down the line or 20 years down the line, people will rise against you. So you need to be in constant touch with people so that you can articulate what people want," chief Nyamphande said.

He said a government that lost direction also lost touch with the people.
"If you will be doing what you want when people are looking forward to something in the end, you will be shocked to find people will be saying they want something else. So it's a lesson I think for all of us in leadership not to go to sleep," chief Nyamphande said.

And chief Nyamphande condemned those who were in the habit of attacking former president Rupiah Banda.

He said losing an election did not make a person a fool or an object of easy ridicule.

"The other thing that I want to say and I am not ashamed to say this: all of us in here are related, we had a chance to have a president from here (Eastern Province) but it failed. I don't see any reason why we have the habit of insulting people; I don't see the reason why. Rupiah Banda is a former president and he is an elderly man. Let's give him the respect he deserves. It's a pity he didn't win the previous elections but that is not a licence for anyone to ridicule him and insult him," chief Nyamphande said.

He urged politicians to practice mature politics.

And Lameck Mangani said the PF would try hard to have decent campaigns in Msanzala.
Mangani appealed to chief Nyamphande to feel free to summon the PF when things go wrong.

Later Col Lungu explained to the traditional leader the reasons behind his joining PF.
