PRESIDENT Michael Sata has appointed finance minister Alexander Chikwanda to act as Republican President while he is away. President Sata left the country on Friday for South Africa where he is attending the African National Congress (ANC) centenary celebrations.
Deputy special assistant to the President for press and public relations Amos Chanda confirmed in an interview that President Sata handed over the instruments of power to Chikwanda, the nominated member of parliament before his departure.
"Vice-President Guy Scott is in the country, he went to North Western Province yesterday but I am not sure if he is back, but yes Honourable Chikwanda is the acting president," he said.
Chanda said President Sata is expected back in the country today or tomorrow.
