LAW enforcement agencies must be aggressive enough in implementing regulations that restrain the youth from alcohol abuse as we risk building a nation of drunkards, says Fr Mambwe Mpasa.

Fr Mpasa, the Mansa Diocese Vicar General, said the level of alcohol abuse in the country was worrying and there was need to urgently bring the situation under control.

"The council and police should frequently start patrolling the streets and the government should ban the selling of alcohol in sachets - tujilijili. The fact that those things are sold on the street makes them readily available to the youths hence the abuse we are seeing," Fr Mpasa said.

"The youth themselves must undergo behavioural change; they should refrain from excessive drinking of alcohol or else we are likely to a nation of drunkards and that's not what we want. The children we have are our assets for the future we are trying to build. Please, I am begging the youth to look after themselves well."

Fr Mpasa said alcohol abuse in the youth had continued to affect their capacity to deliver and explore their potential even in school.

He said there was need to strengthen laws that specifically stop the youths from abusing the alcohol.

Fr Mpasa called on bar owners to be mindful to whom they sold the beer and that their interest should not only be to realise profits but to be careful of the damage that the alcohol was posing to the future of the youth.

He further urged councils to enforce regulations that forbid underage children from patronising bars.

There has been, of late, a public outcry against the abuse of alcohol by young people, who drink even on buses and at shopping malls.
