Police in Shamva have arrested prominent MDC-T official Zivai Chimombe for allegedly murdering his wife following a domestic dispute early yesterday morning. Chimombe, who is brother to Shamva North parliamentary aspirant Mr Godfrey Chimombe, subsequently attempted suicide, but was rescued by neighbours.
He is now receiving treatment at Mount Darwin Hospital under police guard. Mashonaland police spokesperson Inspector Memory Pamire confirmed the case. She said he stabbed his wife twice in the chest before taking a pesticide.
“I can confirm that police in Madziwa, Shamva, arrested the accused after he allegedly stabbed his wife at around 0500 hours after a domestic dispute,” she said.
“Zivai (34) is said to have informed his relatives of his decision to commit suicide soon after he had taken the pesticide.”
Insp Pamire said his relatives promptly informed the police who arrested him while he was receiving medical attention. She expressed concern over the increasing number of deaths linked to domestic violence.
“This case is just one of several involving domestic disputes. We would like to appeal to members of the public to desist from engaging in violence once a domestic dispute erupts.
“They should feel free to come to the police to address such issues because we have public relations desks that are open to everyone.”
MDC-T spokesperson Mr Douglas Mwonzora said: “Yes, we can confirm that we received a report of the case in which the brother of our shadow (Shamva North) MP, Mr Godfrey Chimombe, was arrested in connection with suspected murder.
“As a party, we do not condone political or domestic violence. We expect the police to investigate the matter fully.”
