GENERAL Malimba Masheke says putting Dr Kenneth Kaunda's portrait on the new kwacha notes will be one way of honouring him.
Commenting on suggestions that the new kwacha note should have first Republican president Dr Kaunda's portrait, Gen Masheke, former prime minister in the UNIP government, said the founding father did a lot for Zambia and putting his portrait on the new kwacha notes "would make him feel good".
"Personally, I wouldn't mind having Dr Kaunda's portrait on the new kwacha note. It will be okay because KK did a lot of things for this country," said Gen Masheke who was also defence and security minister in Dr Kaunda's government.
The government recently announced that it would rebase the kwacha by knocking off three zeros from the notes. This decision will therefore necessitate the printing of new notes.
And supporting the calls, former Chingola mayor McDonald Mulongoti said late president Frederick Chiluba removed Dr Kaunda's portrait from the kwacha in bad faith.
"…But I would like to urge the government to also consider reinstating Dr Kaunda's portrait on these new notes as a way of honouring him. This obtains in other countries such as India and the United States, among others," said Mulongoti. "We shall always give credit where it is due."
