SOUTHERN Province minister Miles Sampa has demanded seriousness and change in the work culture by top management at Mazabuka Municipal Council for residents to appreciate services being provided by the government.

Sampa said the government was disappointed that managers at Mazabuka Municipal Council had abandoned their offices to travel to Choma for an Electoral Commission of Zambia workshop.

He said the negative work culture at the local authority should immediately change because residents could not continue being denied required services if government workers who are charged with a responsibility to implement its policies were not interested in staying in office in preference to workshops where they are paid allowances.

Sampa said the PF government was in a hurry to deliver development to the people and that it would not tolerate such negative attitude by government workers.

He said issues of allowances should not be allowed to hinder progress because residents desperately want to see the change they voted for during last September's general elections.

Sampa said this when he inspected a government funded road project.

And Sampa directed acting town clerk Erof Hangoma to submit a detailed report to his office stating why rehabilitation works on Cha Cha Cha Road in Namulonga had not been completed despite government providing funding to the project nearly every year.

He said Mazabuka residents petitioned his office to intervene because of the suspicious manner in which the road project was being implemented.

Sampa said residents have a right to complain when government projects were not done on time.

And Mazabuka district commissioner Eugine Munyama urged the government to ensure the council was completely detached from handling elections.

Munyama said the ECZ should be allowed to operate independently without the involvement of council officers.
