FORMER works minister Gabriel Namulambe yesterday appeared in the Lusaka magistrates' court on a charge of theft by public servant involving 20 bicycles valued at K11 million.

Namulambe, 45, a politician, farmer and businessman of Namulambe Farm in Mpongwe, appeared before chief resident magistrate Joshua Banda. A public prosecutor told the court that the matter was coming up for allocation and magistrate Banda allocated it to magistrate Wilfred Muma's court.

However, magistrate Banda told Namulambe, who is being represented by Sunday Nkonde and Mubanga Bwalya of SBN Legal Practitioners, that he would take his plea because magistrate Muma was out of jurisdiction.

Magistrate Banda has adjourned the case to March 19 for possible plea and any other applications.

Namulambe is charged with theft by public servant contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that Namulambe on November 21, 2010 in Kitwe being employed in the public service as deputy minister in the Ministry of Mines stole 20 bicycles, altogether valued at K11 million, the property of the government which came into his possession by virtue of his employment.
