MDC-T organising secretary and Information Technology Minister Nelson Chamisa arrives in England on Thursday ahead of a weekend rally which the party says is aimed at “refocusing” its external structures in preparation for elections.

Chamisa, his deputy Abednico Bhebhe, the party’s women’s assembly chair and Home Affairs Minister Theresa Makone, youth leaders Costa Machingauta and Promise Mkhwananzi, Mkoba MP Amos Chibaya and Harare Central MP Murisi Zvizai will attend the rally in Birmingham on Saturday.

An estimated 600,000 Zimbabweans moved to the United Kingdom over the last decade, and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s party sees the exiles as an important constituency, although they are denied a vote under current laws which President Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF is reluctant to reform.

Speaking to New Zimbabwe.com ahead of the trip, Chamisa – who took up the position at the party’s congress in May – said they intended to use the meeting to brief exiles about the state of play in the coalition government; moves to draw up a new constitution and elections which could be held within a year.

The delegation from Zimbabwe will meet with the party’s external assembly council on Saturday morning followed by a rally which will open to the public. Chamisa will also speak at a fund-raising dinner later in the evening.

He said: “This trip is intended to reenergise, refocus, revitalise and repackage our party to deliver ultimate victory when election time comes.

“There have been a lot of developments in the country and we would like to engage with Zimbabweans around the issues of democratic reforms, the constitution and the elections, so that they feel they are part of the national discourse. It's their country too."

The rally will take place between 2PM and 6PM on Saturday at the Ladywood Arts and Leisure Centre in Birmingham [B16 8TR]. The fund-raising dinner [8PM-11PM] costs £30 per head and attendance is by registration. For further information call Grey Samakande on 07805925038 or Victor Karonga on 07403128801
