MMD national secretary Major Richard Kachingwe says George Kunda is recuperating in the UTH's VIP fast-track ward contrary to reports that he had died. And Kunda's wife, Irene, confirmed in an interview with Radio Phoenix that her husband was alive and well.
Rumours of the demise of Kunda, the former vice President who was hospitalised on Monday for an unknown illness, have been circulating on social media networks. But Maj Kachingwe said Kunda who is also party chairperson for legal affairs was alive and recuperating in the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
"Following a rumour last night, I called the UTH managing director Dr Lackson Kasonka at night, who said, 'his honour the former vice president is okay' and this morning I rushed to the hospital to see him. I found him recuperating in the VIP fast track ward," Maj Kachingwe said.
"During my discussion with him, he even paid tribute to the hospital staff who have been so nice to him. Between him and the wife, they believe the doctors are doing fine and they are receiving adequate attention. He also informed me that he had been visited by the acting President (Alexander Chikwanda) and he appreciated. So he is well and we just wish him quick recovery."
Maj Kachingwe said he was saddened by what he termed an immoral culture emerging among Zambians of celebrating sad news and spreading false rumours of deaths of public figures.
"I also want to say that there is an immoral culture in the this country which is developing where people could start wishing each other ill. It is quiet dangerous and I think it has stop. I think that culture is alien to Zambia," said Maj Kachingwe.
And Ireen, whose mobile went unanswered when contacted by The Post, was however quoted by Radio Phoenix disputing rumors of the husband's death, saying he was well and was just being observed for a few more days.
