BISHOP John Mambo says leaders in government must be bold and defend decisions they make when in authority.

In an interview, Bishop Mambo, who is former Church of God overseer, said most leaders were afraid to defend their decisions while in authority because they would want to be protected whenever they left power.

"That's the sickness that needs cure in Zambia…Leaders must be able to defend their decisions but we do not have such leaders in Zambia," he said.

Bishop Mambo said the country should strive to reach a level where leaders appointed to serve the people could withstand pressure and defend their decisions while in authority.

"We need to reach a level whereby if you take a stand say, 'I am a leader appointed in the civil servant and this is a stand I am taking, anywhere I will go, I will explain'. From independence, you count, go to the archives and see how many citizens have resigned because they have messed up? Most of them are fired or their contracts come to an end to avoid embarrassment," he said.

And commenting on investigations on former government officials for alleged abuse of office and public resources, Bishop Mambo said the government was moving at a slow pace.

He said there were many enemies in the civil service that were determined to frustrate the government before the next elections.

"Most civil servants are determined to see them (PF) fail in the next five years and if they don't see, there is confusion all over, even directives that come from ministers and permanent secretaries are never taken and that is not in the general rules. So there is a lot of things that are not being done.

They should not sleep with two eyes closed and say all is well, no, because the enemy is strong, the enemy has got the muscle in terms of finances and the minds of all of us are corrupt…," said Bishop Mambo.
