THE opposition MMD today begins provincial conventions to elect the party president with seven candidates vying for the top job. Those contesting the presidency are former vice-presidents; Enoch Kavindele and Pastor Nevers Mumba, and former ministers; Felix Mutati, Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane, Kabinga Pande, Kapembwa Simbao and Moses Muteteka.

The MMD had traditionally held its convention at a central location, at the Mulungushi Rock of Authority in Kabwe but after failing to raise funds they have decided to hold it through provincial conventions.

Muteteka based his popularity claims on his interaction with the youth using his position as MMD national youth chairman.

Mutati campaigned on the need to improve and stabilise the economy of the country once elected.

Dr Musokotwane said he had the experience and wanted to transform the party.
But Kavindele said he was the most suitable candidate as he had served the country at the second highest level.

Pande said he would bring maturity to the party and that the MMD needed a mature, stable, intelligent and progressive leader to re-define the party's direction after a humiliating loss to the PF.

Pastor Mumba said the party needed to tackle the demons and evils that caused its downfall.

And Simbao said he would carry on with the corruption fight if he was given the mandate to lead the MMD as party president.
