A 56-year-old Zambian national has been arrested and charged in Malawi with possession of cannabis.

The woman, identified as Hildah Phiri of Chanzonga Village in Chief Magodi's area in Lundazi District, was picked up by police with three Malawian nationals after being allegedly found with six 90-kilogramme bags of cannabis in Mzimba.

Phiri is said to have hired a vehicle registration number KU 1929 to ferry the drugs from Mgozga into Lundazi.

However, the police were tipped off by members of the public and they impounded the vehicle at a roadblock in Luhili area in Mzimba.

Phiri has been remanded in custody and will appear in court soon.

Meanwhile, the Zambia High Commission in Malawi has advised Zambians to desist from engaging in illicit business.

Zambia's Acting High Commissioner to Malawi, Henry Ngilazi said Zambians should be examples of good citizens and avoid getting involved in illegal activities just to make quick money.
