PRIME Minister Morgan Tsvangirai is paying US$1,400 monthly for the upkeep of his 19-month-old love child with Bulawayo woman, Loreta Nyathi, New Zimbabwe.com can exclusively reveal.

But despite taking financial care of his son, Ethan, the MDC-T leader refuses to help Nyathi obtain a birth certificate for the baby and is yet to meet the tot.

When news broke last year that Tsvangirai, 60, had impregnated the then 21 year-old Nyathi and was not contributing anything towards the upkeep of their child, he swiftly agreed to an out of court settlement.

But in interviews over the weekend, Nyathi’s friends said Tsvangirai – besides maintaining the child – has never shown any interest in the baby.

New Zimbabwe.com understands Nyathi has asked the Prime Minister’s aides to INCREASE the monthly contribution, claiming US$1,400 is hardly sufficient to see her and the baby through a month.

“The money he sends is simply not enough,” said one friend. “She pays US$550 for the rent, an average US$300 for the electricity and water bills, US$100 for the maid, and the remainder goes to groceries.

“The child has no medical aid. It’s not that Loreta wants Tsvangirai to take care of her, but looking after his child is a full time vocation. Ethan must also enjoy the same luxuries as all the PM’s children.”
Tsvangirai, through his lawyer Innocent Chagonda, has also refused to have any written maintenance agreement with Nyathi.

Another friend said: “Her fears are that if she dies, her family will struggle to reach through to Tsvangirai to get him to continue taking care of his son. The PM’s lawyers have refused to have a written out of court settlement with her.
“The situation is made worse by the fact that Tsvangirai has refused to help Loreto get a birth certificate for their son.”

Nyathi refused to comment on the matter while the PM’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka declined to discuss the claims, stating in a terse message: “The Prime Minister is a happily married man.”
Tsvangirai’s lawyer Chagonda could not be reached for comment as several phone calls to his mobile went unanswered.

Tsvangirai and Nyathi first met in late 2009 at the Churchill Arms Hotel in Bulawayo just months after his wife and mother of their six children, Susan, died in a car crash.

The two kept in touch through phone calls and text messages. They romped at several hotels including the Holiday Inn and Nyathi fell pregnant.

During her battle to get child support from Tsvangirai, she revealed that the Prime Minister’s aides had pressured her to abort the pregnancy – including sending her money to travel to South Africa for the procedure at a private clinic. She took their money but kept the baby.

Tsvangirai married Elizabeth Macheka, 35, during a traditional ceremony earlier this month and reports suggest he plans to wed his new wife on September 15.
