Scott highlights government's challenges

VICE-PRESIDENT Guy Scott says the PF government has problems getting its workforce in order because some elements of the civil service are not practical. In an interview, Vice-President Scott said some elements of the civil service only knew how to hold workshops and write letters.

"We have had a lot of trouble; some elements of the civil service don't know how to perform any actions; they know how to hold workshops, how to write letters; they don't know how to do anything, so we have a problem getting our troops...," said Vice-President Scott who was sharing his experience, being the first white Republican Vice-President in the post independence era.

Vice-President Scott said the government's biggest area of concern were the challenges going on in the civil service.

"I am an oversight of cabinet office, I am aware of quite a lot of problems and challenges going on in the civil service and that's the biggest area of concern. You know you make a decision, you give instructions, nothing happens and this leads to some people to think that they are being sabotaged....I think it's difficult to say whether we are being sabotaged or we are being cursed with long standing incompetence and disrespect also for political leadership, so that's the biggest challenge," he said.

Apart from the challenges in the civil service, Vice-President Scott said his experience had been satisfactory so far.

"I think my fellow ministers are accepting me and very cooperative and supportive. I think the public is very supportive, I hope I don't let them down. It is a big responsibility, so it feels good," he said.

Asked about how he feels not to act as Republican president in the absence of President Michael Sata, Vice-President Scott responded: "It does not worry me at all, he is entitled to nominate who he wants, I don't even discuss it with him."
