DEMOCRATIC Republic of Congo Consul Maloba Kanji Chanta yesterday apologised to Zambia over the burning to death of a Zambian driver.
During the burial of Derrick Chanda in Ndola, Chanta said: "We are sorry for what happened to our son. Zambia and Congo are members of one family. Some of you have relatives in Congo, and we ask that you forgive us. Our Constitution does not allow what happened. We are deeply sorry."
She assured Zambians that justice would prevail over Chanda's death saying that 12 people suspected to have been behind the burning of Chanda were arrested over the same.
Chanda, a Zambian truck driver bound for Lubumbashi on Wednesday allegedly knocked down two Congolese pedestrians who died on the spot, a situation which enraged the local people.
Ndola district commissioner Dorothy Nachilongo said the government was saddened by Chanda's death.
Meanwhile, SADC Truck Drivers chairperson Stanley Muluka complained that Congolese at Kasumbalesa border post have continued harassing Zambian drivers even after getting assurance from the Congolese transport minister that the drivers would not be harmed.
In an interview before burial, Muluka urged the Zambian government to talk to their Congolese counterparts over the matter.
"We are sick and tired of the Congolese harassment. We have been complaining about the way we're harassed; the government was not doing anything. It had to take Congolese nationals to burn Derrick to ashes before our government received the message that we were being ill-treated by the Congolese when we go to their country," he complained.
