ZAMBIAN leaders in whatever form should emulate Nelson Mandela's spirit of tolerance of divergent views and the ability to forgive one's enemies, says foreign affairs minister Given Lubinda.

Commenting on the former South African president's 94th birthday, Lubinda yesterday said the occasion should compel Zambians to reflect on the ideas and values which Mandela has stood for.

"On behalf of the Zambian people through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I wish president Mandela a happy 94th birthday as he continues to inspire the whole world in pursuit of peace and goodwill that transcends across national, racial and religious boundaries," Lubinda said, in a telephone interview from China, where he is attending a conference. "May the Good Lord continue to bestow good health and long life to Madiba.

In so doing, I call upon our leaders in Zambia whether political, religious, business, youth and women to emulate Mandela in so far as tolerance of divergent views is concerned. May we all learn from his ability to forgive those who persecute us because that is the way to build peace."

He said Mandela's birthday should compel humanity to reflect upon the suffering of people living in captivity and conflict prone areas.

"Our hearts should go to people living in captivity in Palestine and Western Sahara (Sahrawi Republic) and also in conflict areas such as the eastern side of DR Congo, Mali and all those living in bondage," said Lubinda.

Lubinda is leading the Zambian ministerial delegation at the 5th Forum of China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) that will review the implementation of action plans agreed upon in Egypt in 2009 and also plan for the period 2013 to 2015.

Meanwhile, South African High Commissioner to Zambia Moses Chikane and Ericsson country manager Matthews Mwewa celebrated Mandela's birthday, which fell yesterday, by refurbishing part of the Mtendere Clinic labour ward.

High Commissioner Chikane said that it is important for the children being born today and in future to appreciate the heroes of Africa.

He said, "All people must always remember to do good for others, just like Mandela did."

Mwewa said Nelson Mandela was a selfless person who fought for the children of Africa.

He said Mandela was an African icon who needed to be respected and appreciated for struggles he went through for the sake of South Africa.

Ericsson donated nine computers, stationery, foodstuffs, and a football kit, and shared a meal with the children.
