MIKE Mulongoti says the relationship between the MMD and UPND is a waste of time as both parties have serious issues to sort out within themselves before they can start thinking of forming a pact.

And Mulongoti says MMD president Nevers Mumba must come out in the open and denounce the people carrying the corruption baggage in the MMD leadership to cleanse the party if he has to be taken seriously. MMD and UPND have been working together in parliamentary by-election campaigns.

Mulongoti, who is also former MMD chairperson for elections, said while MMD had an image to build, UPND also had its own difficulties.

"Whatever relationship MMD and UPND establish will not add value if it's just a relationship for the sake of coming together. I think it is a waste of time," Mulongoti said.

"MMD has an image to build and UPND have got their own difficulties in terms of the image of the party. So both teams must first of all find out the problems they are facing and the reasons they are facing those problems. If they can sort out that, they can unite. But if you unite and all of you are in problems, it doesn't take you anywhere."

On corruption, Mulongoti said Mumba could not keep quiet when the indications were that the people with the corruption baggage were the ones who wanted to embrace him.

He said Mumba had a challenge of re-branding the party from the corruption tag if he was to be taken seriously by the Zambian people who voted against the MMD.

"He must as quickly as possible distance himself if he is going to re-brand MMD," Mulongoti said in an interview.

"You cannot be seen to be re-branding the party if you are not distancing yourself from people with dented images. I think that's the challenge to him. So my advice to him is, first of all he has got a big task of recognising that the MMD was rejected on account of corruption. So he should clean up that image and then unite the party; because whatever he will do will be subtracted by those who carry the baggage and this will cut on his political administration."
