ZANU-PF has started holding field days in the country’s 10 provinces as part of efforts to promote the land reform programme. The programme, which will see champion farmers rewarded with farming inputs and machinery, is dubbed “Agricultural Production Promotion Field Days.”
Best farmers will walk away with generators, ploughs, harrows, seed, and fertilisers among other prizes. Zanu-PF party’s department of production led by Cde Dzikamai Mavhaire is spearheading the programme.
The party’s senior officials will take this opportunity to explain to people the benefits derived from the land reform.
Zanu-PF spokesperson, Cde Rugare Gumbo, last Friday said it was important for people to understand the essence of using the land.
“It is a party programme to explain the importance of the land reform. There have been some criticism of our farmers that they are not producing and we want to mobilise them to do their best.
“The field days are being held in every district and every champion farmer in every district will be rewarded for his or her efforts to contribute to the country’s food security,” he said.
Cde Gumbo said factors that determine a champion farmer varies depending on the region.
He said in areas such as Matabeleland region they would be considering cattle farming while in provinces such as Midlands they would be looking at cotton.
According to a programme of events held by the part’s department of production this week, Vice President John Nkomo would officiate at a field day to be held in Murehwa and Goromonzi this month.
Zanu-PF Secretary for Women Affairs Cde Oppah Muchinguri would address farmers and party supporters at a field day to be held in Mbire district on July 20.
She would also meet farmers the following day at another field day in Guruve while Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa who is the Zanu-PF Secretary for Legal Affairs would officiate on two field days to be held in Chimanimani on July 21 and July 25.
The programme would be rounded off by Cde Obert Mpofu in Bikita and Zaka on July 27 and 28 respectively.
Zanu-PF recently resolved to embark on a countrywide tour of farms to access challenges being faced by farmers.
This was after provincial governors presented situational reports painting a gloomy picture on developments on farms more than 10 years after the historic land reform programme.
The governors bemoaned lack of productivity especially on A2 farms saying lack of Government funding and material support incapacitated beneficiaries.
They also noted that too many people were allocating land in various provinces and this was threatening the success of the land reform programme.
