WILLIAM Banda has been arrested for attempting to strangle Muvi TV cameraman Lloyd Kapusa. Police acting spokesperson Ray Hamoonga said Banda, who is UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema's adviser, was yesterday charged with the offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm contrary to section 248 of the Penal Code Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Hamoonga said Banda was expected to appear in court soon. Meanwhile, Banda arrived at Woodlands Police Station around 13:23 hours in the company of his lawyer Martha Mushipe. After his arrival, Banda, Mushipe and Kapusa's lawyer Milner Katolo went into a meeting with the police.

Banda remained in the police station for close to three hours and later demanded some flip-flops, saying he could not go into the cells without them.

After some time, Banda's relatives who included his wife, managed to get the flip-flops, after which the police led him to a cell.

Asked for a comment as he was being led to the cell, Banda responded: "I am a politician, I have no problem," as a handful of UPND cadres and relatives restrained him from talking to journalists.

Last week, Banda almost strangled Kapusa when he appeared at Woodlands Police Station where he was charged and arrested by the joint investigations team in connection with two counts of being in possession of property suspected of being proceeds of crime contrary to section 71 (1) of the forfeiture of proceeds of crime Act No. 19 of 2010.

Muvi TV then opened a docket against Banda and subsequently the police asked him to report to Woodlands Police Station on Saturday.

However, Banda could not report to the police, claiming family commitments.
