Angry residents around Kamwendo Trading Centre in Mchinji district on Tuesday morning pelted stones at Kamwendo Police Unit, charging the officers have overstayed and take part in criminal activities.
Kamwendo often experiences crime, which is said to be currently on the rise.
The commotion started when villagers noted a suspect casually handcuffed to a tree outside the unit, raising questions of security and seriousness.
“They must go and be replaced by others. We think they have overstayed and take part in criminal activities,” said one angry villager.
Police confirmed the incident and said officers were currently engaged with leaders to map a way forward to assist the two parties assist each other to secure the area.
