VETERAN politician and freedom fighter, Daniel Munkombwe, says the renaming of Mulakupikwa University to Robert Makasa is most welcome.

President Michael Sata during the official opening of Parliament last month renamed Mulakupikwa University after freedom fighter Robert Makasa.

In an interview, Munkombwe said whatever weaknesses President Sata might have, he had scored very fast on the renaming of public places after some freedom fighters.

"If there is anybody who is opposed, then he is a stranger to the history of this country, and strangers should be discouraged. Anybody who does not think about his origin and his background is a failed person.

Michael Sata, by renaming that university Mulakupikwa to Robert Makasa University is a good thing. It is only those who were born after independence who may not know the contribution Robert Makasa may have done to Zambia's freedom struggle," he said.

Munkombwe said it was good that President Sata was thinking about the past and the people who contributed greatly to the country's independence.

"He is reclaiming what the freedom fighters and Dr Kenneth Kaunda built. That is a good job and he is scoring and scoring very fast. Let him continue researching and whoever is in the history books, not pretenders, should be considered," he said.

Munkombwe pledged his services if President Sata was short of advisers to advise him on some of the other freedom fighters that played a key role during the liberation struggle.

"I am available to remind him because I have a photostatic memory, I think Dr Kaunda recognised me as such. Photostatic memory.

I can tell what happened in 1951. I can tell you who started the African Welfare Society which was a forerunner to the ANC and was started by a man from the valley, Francis Chembe," Munkombwe said.

He said the country had some overzealous politicians who tend to forget about the past.

"I encourage them to read history. If you are intoxicated with political power or intoxicated with some political fantasy, you may not know what took place.

Any history book that will exclude names such as Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, Kenneth Kaunda and many other people who I think he has in mind to name, that is living a false life," he said.

Munkombwe observed that there were many people who were now masquerading as freedom fighters.

"But when you look into the history books, the records, under whose district leadership did they operate in the African National Congress Party? Under whose provincial leadership did they operate with, in the ANC?

I know that Daniel Munkombwe was district secretary of the ANC and my chairman was late David Kapaya. So when I say I am a freedom fighter, I am not pretending, I am not trying to appease anybody, that is what is there," said Munkombwe.
