Scott thanks Chingola for role in PF formation

VICE-President Guy Scott says President Michael Sata and the entire PF are grateful to Chingola residents as the party was born in the district.

Speaking to guests who attended a dinner hosted in his honour by Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) at Nchanga Lodge, Dr Scott said the miners at Nchanga in Chingola played a pivotal role in the formation of the Patriotic Front and worked hard to strengthen it.

"Natotela sana mukwayi (thank you very much) for what you have done for PF, you the people of Chingola. Since 2001 when the party was formed here, you have been with us. It was you the miners who asked us to come and talk to you about PF. The Copperbelt was straightforward and the party spread to other parts of the country just like that. We are now in government after a long journey of over 10 years," he said.

Vice-President Scott said he had to visit Chingola, particularly the mines, because it was important for the government to familiarise itself with reality to ensure that people begin to see development.
He said the PF and its government would not let down the people who voted for it.

And speaking in an interview after a tour of the Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP) shaft number four underground mine and many other departments of the company in Chililabombwe, Vice-President Scott said it was gratifying that Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) had invested in infrastructure aimed at extending the life of the mine.

He said the stance taken by KCM to heavily invest in the mine was befitting the government's policy of taking a long-term view of investment.

"We are happy that KCM is concerned about its economic impact on the Copperbelt and its impact upon the environment of this province. If this sets the standard for large mining investments, then it's a good thing," he said.
He further said he was very impressed with the predominance of Zambians in senior management positions at KCM.

Vice-President Scott said the large stake of KCM was being run by Zambians and the company's deliberate policies of giving back to the community through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes such as the sustainable livelihood project for the rural population in its areas of operation was impressive.

And KCM chief executive officer Jayakumar Janakaraj said the company had very deep values aimed at sustaining the company operations and contributing significantly to national development.
Janakaraj said the company does not want to be an island of excellence but partners in progress and prosperity.

"Values for KCM are very fundamental; the base that we have built this company on is trust and humility. You will find that passion in every employee you see. This is a great company that will last forever because it is built on humility," he said.

Janakaraj said KCM was grateful for the peaceful set up the company has had in the last eight years and the investment that had been put in so far.
