EASTERN Province minister Malonzo Sichone yesterday escaped unhurt when his official vehicle careered off the road and rammed into a billboard for Katopola Basic School after hitting a cyclist along the Chipata/Mfuwe Road.
The accident occurred at Katopola turn off about 2 kilometres from the Central Business District. Sichone, who was with his messenger and driver, met his fate on his way to Chipata Airport to see off defence minister Geoffrey Mwamba who was in the province to officially launch the Zambia National Service youth skills training at Chiwoko.
According Sichone's messenger Justine Mwale, the cyclist who was
unconscious after the accident, was rushed to Chipata General Hospital.
Mwale said the side mirror hit the cyclist.
"What happened is that as we were coming from town, we just saw the cyclist turning. The driver tried to hoot and later tried to apply brakes but it failed until he hit the cyclist. He was hit by the view mirror," he said.
Eastern Province permanent secretary Emmanuel Mwamba expressed concern at the high accident rates.
Mwamba said there were no serious injuries and that the minister escaped unhurt.
A check at the scene around 13:40 hours found a GRZ vehicle
registration number GRZ 131 CJ with a damaged left mirror.
