Minister of Finance Ken Lipenga has said the agricultural sector in Malawi will increase its vibrancy after signing a K4.1 billion with the Norwegian government to improve research capacity of the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar).
Lipenga said he was assured that the funding will greatly improve agriculture’s contribution to the Malawi economy.
“The funding will help improve research standards in the agriculture sector and in turn help improve the sector’s contribution to the economy at large.
“This programme also brings new approaches to supporting farmers, key stakeholder and university graduates in managing climate change related impacts,” Lipenga said.

Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi Asbjorn Eidhammer said his government will ensure that issues of capacity constraints in the agricultural sector are addressed.
Eidhammer said managing agriculture goes in line with addressing the effects of climate change.
“Research is needed to develop new knowledge, technologies and systems to enhance climate change adaptation and mitigation in Malawi. This programme will help to ensure that future climate change policies are
supported by relevant scientific evidence,” he said.
Norway has partnered with Luanar’s Bunda College of Agriculture since 1998.
