THE government has allocated 200x50 kilogramme bags of fertiliser and 100x5 kilogramme bags of maize seed to Luangwa district under the Food Security Pack Wetland input for 2013 through the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health.
Luangwa district commissioner, Eunie Mumba said the district had received 100x50 kilogramme bags of D-compound, 100x50 kilogramme bags of urea fertiliser and 100x5 kilogramme bags of maize seed to benefit vulnerable but viable farmers in the district.
Mumba commended the government for the timely gesture, saying this would help vulnerable but viable farmers in Luangwa to start preparing for this year's farming season.
He urged the department of community development to quickly distribute the consignment to the intended people so that the government achieves its intended programme of enhancing food security in the country.
Mumba also warned beneficiaries not to frustrate the government efforts by selling the fertiliser to outsiders as this was intended to benefit the people of Luangwa.
He said the government was working tirelessly to improve the food security in the district which had always been crying for relief maize.
Mumba said the government had continued subsidising farming inputs and people should be seen taking advantage of such programmes like the food security pack which was aimed at helping the vulnerable but viable farmers in the country.
