ORGANISATION of African Trade Union Unity president Ibrahim Ghandour has noted that Zambia's minimum wage is too low.

Speaking during the opening of Zambia Congress of Trade Unions pre-2014 national budget workshop in Lusaka yesterday, Professor Ghandour also noted that civil servants in Zambia get very low salaries to be paying tax.

Prof Ghandour, a member of the Sudanese parliament, explained that the Sudanese government had managed to stop taxing all civil servants owing to the fact that their wages were too low.

He added that civil servants in most African countries and other workers who earn low wages could not avoid to meet their daily needs because of the high cost of living.

He called on the Zambian government to broaden the tax base.
