UNIP says the continued violence perpetrated by political thugs in the country is alarming and should be condemned by all patriotic and peace-loving Zambians.

In a statement issued on Friday, UNIP research and information officer Elina Nyirenda stated that it was unfortunate that incidents of violence had continued to bedevil the country.

Nyirenda, who is also losing UNIP Chipata Central candidate in last July's by-election, stated that what happened to one opposition leader in Kasama recently was distressing and unacceptable in a democraticsociety.

"Those responsible should be arrested and prosecuted. We should not allow our nation to be under siege from thugs. Allowing this behaviour to continue without firm action being taken by the authorities responsible threatens our country's peace and security," she stated.

Nyirenda stated that her party believed that it was the responsibility of all leaders in political parties to put their cadres in line by speaking against violence and making sure culprits are brought to book.
