PRESIDENT Michael Sata yesterday asked Chinese contractors working on Copperbelt roads to employ more Zambians and reduce on their expatriate labour.
And President Sata says the slogan of more money in people's pockets will only become a reality if every citizen works extra hard to improve their living standards.
Speaking when he launched the construction of a K561 million Kitwe-Chingola dual carriageway, President Sata directed the Minister of Works, Supply, Communication and Transport Yamfwa Mukanga to strictly monitor the works and also ensure that Zambians were employed to work on the roads.
"You Chinese, just bring technical people, engineers to guide the road constructions. The rest must be Zambians and that's all what I want to see. These works must be done by Zambians. We know very well that there is unemployment in China but we just want you to bring the technicians," President Sata said.
He said his administration would not only work on the dual carriageway from Ndola to Chingola but that the road project would include the construction of the road from Sabina to Mufulira and the Mufulira-Ndola road.
President Sata said the projects signified the commitment of his government to investing heavily in the country's economic infrastructure in order to favourably compete in the global economy and subsequently create jobs.
"This project comprises of the upgrading of the existing 45.5 kilometres to the north-bound carriageway, from the Kazembe Road junction in Kitwe to Kasompe junction in Chingola. Furthermore, the South-bound carriageway consist of the construction of the new asphalt carriage way and the scope consist the construction of a new bridge at Mwambashi River and reinforcement of the existing bridge," President Sata said.
He said the project would be implemented over a period of two years and 500 jobs will be created during the construction period.
And President Sata said every Zambian must be encouraged to work extra hard to realise the dream of more money in people's pockets.
