President Mugabe unveils a plaque at the Sino Zim Cotton Holdings ginnery, while Vice President Joice Mujuru looks on in Harare yesterday

President Mugabe yesterday officially commissioned the Sino Zim Cotton Holdings plant in Harare at a ceremony that was attended by Vice President Joice Mujuru, several ministers and other senior Government officials.

President Mugabe first toured the ginnery and spinning divisions before unveiling the plaque at the company’s plant in Waterfalls.

No official speeches were lined up at the event for the company that was established in May 2010 as a joint venture company between Zimbabwe and China.

Its ginnery has state-of-the-art equipment with a minimum capacity of 25 000 metric tonnes of cotton.

The spinning division also promotes value addition through production of high quality yarn for both domestic and international markets in Africa, Asia and Europe.

Officials at the company said its primary objective was to promote cotton production and ensuring farmers had equal and free access to high quality inputs at viable and sustainable prices.

The company’s initiatives are complemented by Chimanimani Logistics, a trucking firm which enhances translocation of seed cotton and inputs to and from regional warehouses and ginneries.

Sino Zim is a complete participator in the cotton value chain, being involved in farmer education, inputs supply, purchasing, processing and export of the product.

Since its inception in 2009, the company has made great strides in penetrating the once monopolised market and established an ever growing niche since then.

It boasts a farmer database of over 20 000 annually on a combined contract of 100 000 hectares and has seven regional offices in the different areas in the country.
