(HERALD ZW) Latest: US embassy staffer booed, heckled by Masvingo youths

There was drama at the Masvingo Civic Centre, Wednesday evening, after a US embassy staffer was booed and heckled by youths protesting the illegal economic sanctions imposed by Washington on Zimbabwe.

The youths booed and heckled programme assistant of the Zimbabwe-United States Alumni Association (ZUSAA), Ms Corra-Leigh Magiya Magiya, during a question and answer segment after her presentation on the Business Entrepreneur Exchange Programme.

The programme is under the Young African Leaders Initiative which every year sends about 50 local youths to the US for training in business and entrepreneurship, public management and civic leadership.

Trouble started at the event after some youths sitting in the public gallery demanded to know why the US government targeted only 50 youths under the African Leaders Initiative when other Zimbabweans were mired in poverty because of illegal sanctions.

They rapped the US for hypocrisy saying Washington’s policies had economically ruined Zimbabwe.

The meeting abruptly ended after the youths started singing revolutionary songs denouncing the US government and its regime change policies in Zimbabwe.

Zanu-PF national deputy political commissar in the Youth League Cde Talent Majoni who attended the meeting, defended the heckling and booing accusing the US government of covertly pursuing the regime change agenda in Zimbabwe.

“We simply wanted to know why the US government targets only 50 youths in Zimbabwe for training in their country as if they are doing it in good faith because their sanctions are hurting millions of ordinary Zimbabweans. Our point is that there is nothing that our youths can learn from the US which is known for causing suffering in other nations across the globe,” he said.

Cde Majoni added that rather than learning from US President Barack Obama, President Mugabe’s visionary leadership and his spirited push to economically empower the oppressed was a far much better lesson to local youths.
