Choma mayor Geoffrey Makaya has called on the Ministry of Agriculture in the district to carry out a proper crop assessment in view of anticipated poor yields due to poor rainfall in some parts of the district.
Makaya said there was need for an accurate crop assessment so that the district prepared itself adequately to make up for the shortfall. Makaya, who was speaking after a tour of some areas in the district, said the state of crops in the fields he visited was not impressive.
He said maize fields in some areas had been badly affected by the prolonged dry spell, causing worry among farmers. Makaya said the gloomy picture on the ground would impact negatively on household food security.
He said most farmers had adequately prepared themselves but had been disappointed by the poor rainfall pattern.
