THE Catholic Centre for Justice Development and Peace (CCJDP) has urged President Levy Mwanawasa to give his government's position over the recent revelations of abuse of public resources. Commenting on the revelations of thefts and misappropriation of public funds in government ministries, departments and foreign missions, Emmanuel Mali from the economic justice programme under the CCJDP, challenged President Mwanawasa to give the government's position over the matter.

"We feel that the President has to come out strongly on it. The President has been quiet, let him come out strongly," Mali said. " And he should give the government's position over this. It does not auger well for the President to be quiet on this matter."

He said that all controlling officers involved in misappropriations should be brought to account for the irregularities. "All those with cases to answer should be put on suspension. All controlling officers involved should be made to answer," Mali said. Mali also said there was need for institutions like Parliament to look after national resources well.

There has been revelations of thefts and misappropriation of public funds in government ministries, departments and foreign missions at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sittings of late.
